Treatment for Shoulder Strain
by NuView Health Medical

Can a chiropractor treat a shoulder strain?

Yes. Chiropractic care can rehabilitate the rotator cuff, which is the area you are feeling pain in the shoulder. At NuView Health Medical, we often see nerve pinching and tears in the rotator cuff. We also see that range of motion has decreased when moving your arm or shoulder in a circle.

We will form a custom plan for your rehabilitation, since every shoulder strain is unique. Both our chiropractors and physical therapists will work hard to alleviate your inflammation and pain, coming up with a plan that may include the following:

  • Myofascial Release Therapy
  • Spinal manipulation to restore balance
  • Physical therapy exercises
  • Application of heat and ice
  • Acupuncture
  • Massages

A chiropractor can be a longer-term solution for shoulder strain by reducing the possibility of scar tissue buildup. Timely treatments will also reduce the chances of arthritis developing in the shoulder joint.

What happens if shoulder strain goes untreated?

If left untreated, shoulder strain can lead from partial tears that are treatable to severe tears that require years of rehabilitation. You may be in constant pain when reaching or lifting at work. It may be impossible to perform home improvement projects. Athletes may become dependent on pain-relieving steroid injections. To drive the point home, read about a condition called “frozen shoulder” that can happen when shoulder injuries are left untreated for years.

Why does my shoulder pop when I lift my arm?

If you mean “cracking joints“, the medical term is crepitus. It describes any grating, crunching, or popping that occurs under the skin. Various types of crepitus occur between bones, joints, and fluid-filled sacs called bursa.

If your shoulder “pop” is accompanied by pain, there could be an internal muscle strain or tear that needs to be addressed. More severely, it could be a sign of impingement syndrome. While drugs can be prescribed to limit this pain, NuView Health Medical offers drug-free services: physical therapy, massage, chiropractic, and acupuncture.
