Bursitis is an inflammation that occurs when a bursa becomes agitated. Bursae are small sacs of fluid that provide cushioning throughout the body. This works to reduce friction between the bones, allowing for better movement. When bursitis develops, movement becomes more painful and difficult for the affected area. In the case of elbow bursitis, the elbow’s bursas become inflamed. Here at NuView Health Medical, we are interested in providing New York citizens with care for this particular condition.
This kind of bursitis is medically known as olecranon bursitis. To diagnose this condition, the patient must first visit a chiropractic center and report signs and symptoms. Someone with bursitis can expect symptoms like elbow pain, redness, swelling, tenderness, and pus. Some patients report running a fever or the chills. The condition may even be severe enough to restrict an elbow’s range of motion. Some symptoms develop quickly while others show up gradually over time.
The doctor’s physical examination of the elbow will be the most important part of a diagnosis. If enough symptoms are noted, the doctor will then move on to management and treatment.
Elbow bursitis is often the result of an elbow injury from an outside impact; a sports injury or vehicle collision may be the cause of that injury. Repetitive wear-and-tear activity can also cause an elbow’s bursae to develop inflammation. Certain types of infection have also been known to cause elbow bursitis, with bacteria invading deeper layers of tissue within the elbow. Elbow bursitis may result from certain types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
Believe it or not, bursitis is prevalent among people who frequently rest their elbows on hard surfaces. This is how the nickname “student’s elbow” came about for elbow bursitis, with many students adopting this particular habit.
Chiropractic care offers a non-surgical alternative for bursitis treatment. Our chiropractor can relieve elbow pain through a variety of methods, most notably with massage therapy or physical therapy. Chiropractic treatment will be based on the patient’s individualized needs.
