What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Also known as intermetatarsal neuroma, Morton’s is a nerve condition of the foot. It is estimated that as much as 30 percent of the population have this condition with 4 out of 5 of those being women. This is likely due to the use of high heeled shoes which seem to exacerbate the condition.

Morton’s Neuroma Causes

The cause of Morton’s neuroma is unknown. However, doctors do know that certain things that can make it more likely to happen. This encompasses anything that puts undue pressure on the nerves at the base of your toes or in the ball of your foot and includes:

  • Wearing high heels, tight or poorly fitting shoes
  • High impact sporting activities like tennis or running
  • Genetics – flat feet, misshapen “hammer” toes, and high arches

Symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma

There is no outward indication of a problem with Morton’s neuroma. The first symptom is often a tingling between the toes (commonly the third and fourth). It is often described as feeling like there is a pebble in your shoe or one similar to that of walking on a corn. Additional symptoms may include:

  • Pain that shoots from the area into other parts of the foot and leg
  • Feeling of numbness or burning in the toes
  • Feeling of clicking when you press between those toes

How Our Chiropractors Can Help

Our skilled chiropractors at NuView Health Medical can help relieve the discomfort of Morton’s neuroma. In fact, chiropractic treatment has arguably proven to be more effective than traditional treatments like orthopedic insoles, ice packs, corticosteroid shots, and/or Decompression surgery.

A 2015 Journal of Chiropractic Medicine study of Morton’s patients, for whom traditional treatments had failed, showed chiropractic treatment to be successful in almost 80 percent of patients. Most impressive is that this relief came after only six treatments.

Chiropractic treatment for this condition is simple. One of our trained and certified chiropractors will energetically tug on the toes to release any tension/stiffness that may be causing the problem. It is important that you do not attempt to do this yourself at home. Only chiropractors can safely relieve nerve pressure through this manual manipulation of the metatarsal joints.
